The Post-Christmas Christmas Gifts Post

This year I did not knit or make any gifts for friends, which is very unlike me. We’ll chalk it up to all the new knitwear designs in which I’ve been immersing myself. (I have another one that I’m hoping to send out for testing shortly in the new year.)

Other than my mom’s Portage cardigan (see previous post here), I knit only the following gifts for Christmas 2018: three Honeypie hats for Andy, Jacob and Sophie, a Barley Light hat for Andy, and a Keep Me Cozy Fringe Cowl for Mom. Scroll below to read about each project.

While I do not typically enjoy working with chunky yarn, it is most practical for knitting at a supersonic pace to generate those Christmas gifts on time. My eyes utterly feasted on the tonals of this Julie Asselin Yotta, which is 100% Columbia/Rambouillet wool. The colorways shown above from left to right are Midnight Oil, Aprés La Pluie and my favorite, Romance.

In our family photo shoots, silly pictures are always in order.

Honeypie is a brilliantly quick cable hat pattern by Tin Can Knits. Click here to view the pattern in the Tin Can Knits Ravelry store.

The Midnight Oil colorway (below) looks dark gray in some lighting and almost navy in others. I looooove a nice blue sheen in my grays and blacks!

Jacob’s Honeypie (knit in Aprés La Pluie, below) is a soft blue-gray, which matches his eyes perfectly. Accident? Absolutely not.

Lastly, here is a closeup of my daughter’s Honeypie. The Romance colorway is a delicate pink with lavender tones–one of those unearthly beautiful colors that makes me sigh.

Andy had been grumbling that he needed more knit hats, so while I lied and told him I had no time and that he would have to wait until after the holidays (hehe), I was in fact busy knitting him not one but two hats. (I actually had plans for a third, but the yarn has not yet arrived. I’ll whip up that one some time next month.)

Chance would have it that all Christmas hats for the year hailed from the Tin Can Knits design library. Having knit the chunky Honeypie hat for Andy, I thought a fingering weight beanie would be needed. (Fingering weight hats are essential!) I opted for Barley Light, a FREE pattern that has been languishing in my Ravelry queue, knit up in this beautiful brown Twisted Fintch MCN (which was languishing in my stash). The colorway is called Adrift.

My final gift for the holidays is the Keep Me Cozy Fringe Cowl by Susan Sheby, a pattern I purchased from the Knit Collage site. The yarn is Knit Collage Rolling Stone, an India-inspired yarn with sparkly trims and colorful ribbons. Mom’s cowl is knit in the colorway Rain Dance.

This pattern was fun to knit but is probably even more fun to wear.

I think this year’s gift knitting record will be easy to beat in 2019. Oh wait, I forgot about Mom’s Christmas Portage. The hats should be easy to beat, at least.

Happy Holidays!
